Biography
Born in 1989 in Richmond, Virginia, Wilmer Wilson IV earned his BFA at Howard University in 2012 and his MFA at the University of Pennsylvania in 2015. Currently residing in Philadelphia, PA, his artwork investigates the marginalization and care of Black bodies in contemporary life. Wilson’s concern with “the way that blackness is shaped in and by city space” and interest in “producing possibilities for representation that exist apart from global advertising strategies” has shaped his work to shed light on the complexities of identity, space, and power dynamics. Wilson’s work has been featured in various exhibitions, including the New Museum Triennial, NYC (2018), the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2021), and at the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (2017), and more. Wilson’s artistic endeavors have been generously supported by fellowships, including The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellowship and The American Academy in Rome Fellowship.
