Biography

Titus Kaphar was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1976. He earned a BFA from San Jose State University in 2001 and an MFA from Yale School of Art in 2006. He was the recipient of the Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Fellowship in 2014, a Creative Capital grant in 2015, and the Robert R. Rauschenberg Artist as Activist grant in 2016. In 2018, he was awarded the MacArthur “Genius” and Art for Justice Fund grants. His work can be found in numerous collections including those of the Crystal Bridges Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. He is the founder of NXTHVN, a nonprofit arts incubator and fellowship program in the Dixwell neighborhood of New Haven where he resides.
