Biography
Taha Clayton was born in Houston, TX, and raised in Toronto, ON. Now based in Brooklyn, NY, Clayton draws inspiration from classical realism. Clayton’s upbringing as a Black Muslim in a small, blue-collar, White community has aided him in creating contemporary images of empowerment that address the historical mistruths in Western ideals and ethnic antiquity.
Clayton’s art has gained attention, notably at the “2020 Vision” South Hampton Arts Center exhibition. His contributions to the art world have been recognized in numerous publications, including “New American Paintings,” “Fine Art Connoisseur,” and the “International ARC Salon Competition Catalog.” His artistic journey is also captured in the acclaimed 2016 documentary, “Heavyweight Paint.” In 2021, he was commissioned to paint New York’s Transport Union Commission Covid-19 Memorial at Local 100. Additionally, in July 2021, the Art Renewal Center selected Clayton as one of 23 artists to be featured in the groundbreaking online auction, “Important 21st Century Realism,” hosted by Sotheby’s.
