Biography

Renee Cox is a Jamaican American artist, photographer, and activist whose work focuses on themes of Black identity, race, and gender. Cox reimagines art historical canons and envisions new methods of representation. Born in Jamaica and raised in New York, Cox began her career as a fashion photographer before shifting to the arts in the 1990s. She earned a BA from Syracuse University and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program in 1992. Cox’s work has been featured in major museums, including the Whitney Museum, LACMA, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Her achievements include awards from the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and the National Gallery of Jamaica. Alongside her work, she has also taught at NYU, Columbia, and Yale.
