Biography
Mickalene Thomas was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1971. Thomas began her education studying Pre-Law and Theater Arts in Portland, Oregon. A Carrie Mae Weems exhibition at the Portland Art Museum encouraged her to change direction to pursue fine art. She attended Yale University and graduated with an M.F.A. in 2002. During that time, Thomas was also a resident artist at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2000 to 2003). In 2011, she participated in the Versailles Foundation Munn Artists Program in Giverny, France.
Thomas’s can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among many others. She is represented in the U.S. by Lehmann Maupin Gallery in N.Y.C and Susanne Vielmetter in L.A.
