Biography

Lezley Saar was born in Los Angeles, California in 1953. She is the daughter of prominent African American artist Betye Saar and art restorer and ceramicist Richard Saar. She is also the sister of fellow artist Alison Saar. Saar studied at L’Institut Francais de Photographie and later earned a B.A. from California State University at Northridge. She has exhibited extensively for decades, often exploring themes of biracial and transgender identity in her work. Her work can be found in the collection of the California African American Museum, the Ackland Art Museum, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others.
