Biography

On their bold, expressionistic canvases, Jonathan Lyndon Chase represents queer Black subjectivity. Floating heads and bodies—which often overlap against ambiguous, colorful grounds—populate Chase’s compositions and blur the boundaries between public and private space, and between self and other. The Philadelphia-born and -based artist’s practice also includes sculpture, video, works on paper, and installation. Chase received their MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Stockholm, and Shanghai. They have exhibited at institutions including the Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas. In all their work, the artist explores how care and closeness are essential to community building.
