Biography
Dara Haskins was born in Baltimore in 1992 and received her B.A. in Fine Art from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2019. She’s been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Artist of the Week from Rush Art Gallery in 2020 and The J Henry Scheidt Memorial Travel Scholarship to Cuba in 2019. Haskins won the Mural Arts Fellowship award for African American Artists in 2021 and is currently an artist-in-residence with Twelve Gates Arts in Philadelphia.
Inspired by her travels to Cuba and the impact of worldwide feelings of isolation during COVID-19, Haskins developed a series titled “Taste,” which explores sensuous and fleeting moments of bliss. Haskins also grapples with how the black body has been represented and looked at throughout history, incorporating aesthetics from the African Diaspora into her practice.
