Biography
Chakaia Booker (b. 1953) is a sculptor known for abstract works that explore themes of labor, ecology, and cultural identity. Booker has a background in sociology (B.A., Rutgers University, 1976) and fine arts (M.F.A., City College of New York, 1993). Her sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are part of over 40 public collections. Booker gained recognition at the 2000 Whitney Biennial and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005. She also works in printmaking, photography, and ceramics, with works featured at the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. Her public installations include Millennium Park in Chicago, the Garment District in New York, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ New York Avenue Sculpture Project in Washington, D.C.
