Biography

Sharif Bey was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1974. He earned a B.F.A in ceramics from Slippery Rock University, an M.F.A in studio art from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Ph.D. in art education from Pennsylvania State University. In 2003, Bey was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and traveled to Slovakia to research post-socialist art education reform. Bey has been a visiting artist at a number of artist residencies including the McColl Center for Visual Art, Hunter College, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Pittsburgh Glass Center, and the Vermont Studio Center. He has completed commissioned installations for the United States Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan and Jakarta, Indonesia, and in 2018 was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Grant. Bey is currently an associate professor at Syracuse University School of Education.
