Biography
Accra Shepp is a visual artist who was born in 1962 in New York City and is currently based in Queens. Shepp earned a B.A. in Art History and Studio Art from Princeton University in 1984. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts/Program in Conservation Institute at NYU, in 1986.
His art has been in permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, to name a few. Additionally, his work has been featured in books and publications such as The New York Review of Books, The Order of Things, New York in Color, Harlem: A City in Images, and Committed to the Image. Shepp’s accolades include a fellowship at Princeton University through the Atelier program, a Senior Fulbright Fellowship in Indonesia, two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, and a residency at Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy.
