We hope that you, our friends, partners, supporters, and artists are in good health as we enter 2021. We also hope that your immediate and extended families are safe from the coronavirus.
While the challenges presented by 2020 put all casual expectations of business as usual on hold, we continued to prioritize the PFF Mission by creating innovative ways to “focus to the full range of African-American visual creativity and its essential place in the history and discourse of American art.”
We quickly developed a plan to create content and scholarship via ZOOM virtual spaces. Shuga & Wata was created as a gathering platform for virtual conversations with important active artists. It attracted a solid audience of art lovers to “what’s creatively nourishing about our presence, struggles and contributions” as post-diaspora artists and intellectuals. A special ‘thank you’ to PFF Intern, Cameron Downey for her thorough transcriptions of these conversations.
As a ‘private/public’ collection, we loaned works to the Amistad Center at the Wadsworth Atheneum, The Michener Museum of Art, and to the SITES program at the Smithsonian Institution. Our art is meant to inspire and can only do so when it is made available for public viewing through physical and or virtual means.
January 2021 marks the eighth year since I was asked to become Principal Curator. I have resigned from that position. During my tenure, PFF Collection has become nationally recognized for its principled ways of doing business, the diverse but organic consolidation of African American art of the 20th and 21st century, and its willingness to partner with art institutions, museums large and regional – including an HBCU.
The rewards of this venture brought me the highest levels of deeply seeded joy. PFF now possesses over 420 artworks and art objects, multiple exhibitions and catalogs, a host of salutary press reviews, and it remains a healthy entity guided by a passionate collector, a very capable Collections Manager, and most importantly, the irrevocable passions we have inspired in hundreds of thousands of American art lovers.
As a transitional measure, I have agreed to be available as a PFF Advisor for 2021. I thank each of you who in your own way gifted me your friendship, and who became valued PFF supporters.
